Jin Shin Do
A Unique Therapy
Jin Shin Do translates to "The Way of the Compassionate Spirit". It is a unique blend of Japanese acupressure technique, Chinese acupuncture and acupressure theory, Taoist philosophy, Qigong (breathing and exercise techniques), Reichian segmental theory and principles of Eriksonian psychotherapy. Jin Shin Do promotes a deep state of relaxation allowing one to move out of the head and into the body where feelings and inner wisdom are accessed.
Origins
Originated by psychotherapist Iona Marsaa Teeguarden in the 1960's, the Jin Shin Do Foundation for Bodymind Acupressure is based in California USA. Jin Shin Do is recognized by the NCCAOM & AOBTA organizations as a major form of Asian Bodywork Therapy.
Publications
Iona Teeguarden has produced several books on Jin Shin Do including; The Joy of Feeling: Bodymind Acupressure, The Revised Complete Guide to Acupressure and The Acupressure Way of Health: Jin Shin Do.
Acupressure
Jin Shin Do uses gentle yet deep finger pressure on specific points on the body (acu-points as in acupuncture) and includes 'body focusing' techniques to help release chronic tension and balance energy flow. This 'energy flow' is known as Qi (pronounced as Chi) in traditional Chinese medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Jin Shin Do is based on the theory that this vital life force energy flows through specific pathways in the body called meridians. When these meridians are blocked, tension forms around the acu-point leading to imbalanced energy flow and illness.
Mind & Body as One
Jin Shin Do offers an experience that facilitates feeling the bodymind connection. As pressure is gradually applied to acu-points and held long enough, one becomes aware of physical and emotional stressors that have been generating the tension thus providing a deep release to the tension.
